Hey folks,

I’m interested in buying a used VW t6.1 Coast which has 57k miles on it. I’m not too worried about the mileage but would you have any suggestions with what to ask the dealer about/look for on a camper of this age. I haven’t seen the service history yet but will certainly let ask for it. The value is approx 52k at the moment.

I would check out owner history how many is ex.hire and what warranty you get.Get VIP membership to get handover check lists.
 
Check the condition of the canvas that it hasn't been caught when closing.
Ask about the cam belt. Vw have changed their guidelines on this but get it checked anyway.
Try and get the leisure batteries checked too.

If I was spending that sort of amount I would be thinking very carefully about a new California surf - with DTD discounts should be £62k but would come with 5 years servicing & warranty a years tax & zero miles on the clock......
 
Yeah, I did consider that but I think the happy camper over with that 5 + promise has now ended potentially? So I may have missed the boat, unfortunately.

The coast wouldn’t normally have been my go to, but this particular version seems to have a great spec…led headlights, digital cockpit, heater, air con and interior lighting pack which appealed

The 5+5 offer is still live but the interest free finance has gone.
 
Looks like it has been through one main service in that time at 36k miles but nothing too sinister at this stage. I’m assuming it will need a cam belt and water pump change in a year or so so perhaps that’s a way to haggle a little. The dealer said they would service it again before it goes out (who seem to have a great reputation on auto trader). It’s out of warranty more or less now too which I could perhaps use to my advantage? Great spec though for a coast which is still appealing.

It should have had a DSG oil change at 40k. This is critical. Cam belt is now 140000 miles I think. You can get the all in warranty and servicing once the van is 3 years old.

New Surf comes with all of that except the digital cockpit. As @andyinluton says makes good sense for another 10k. New van 59k miles less and full warranty. IMO Coast's in the UK are hard to shift so you need to negotiate hard if it's the one you want.
 
Fair point. I had a look and it is indeed 62k with discounts. I’ve asked for a quote through various finance options and will see what comes back. At this stage, I am definitely leaning towards a new car with warranty and servicing included. Will see what comes back. Cheers all

I thought some DSG did not need oil change, as they were supposed to be “sealed for live”. Are all the DSG on transporter/california of the same type, that require an oil change?

As far as I am aware it is 2 yrs or 40,000 miles, whichever is first for DSG and 4Motion Haldex.

Why are they hard to shift?

I have to say I'd go long warranty & newer tho for that money plus a bit.

Could also buy VW service package after 1 year giving 2 years warranty, all in one recovery, 2 mots, and 2 services

40k miles / no time period ....I need another one in 3k

I like the Coast, just to be clear and this is only my observations. Obviously there are limited numbers of Coasts in the Uk, but when i see them for sale they don't seem to sell quickly at all. Maybe most people just prefer the full fat Ocean and shy away from the Coast even though some have been really good buys. Apart from the manual roof what's the reason to buy??
 
Check the roof closes and seals properly at the front. Measure height at front and rear left & right. Check closing clips aligned centrally left and right.

How much more 'full fat' is the Ocean over the Coast? OK I don't have LED headlights, digital dash, electric roof or double glazing........ but I have everything else. A Coast represents very good value if the above don't really matter to you (they don't make it drive any better).

If you have "everything else " a lot of options must have been ticked, at launch in addition to the LED headlights, electric roof, double glazing and digital dash there were also these differences:

16" wheels v 17"
16" chassis - ie smaller brakes
Privacy glass
basic stereo
Voice control
comfort lighting
floor mats
fog lights
heated seats
lane assist
navigation
park assist
power latching slider
rear view camera
no 3 zone aircon
wired app connect only
sliding window on kitchen side only
additional pockets on back of front seats.

A few bits that I'm not 100% sure about
Full panoramic opening to front of the pop top
Folding door mirrors
