I’m contemplating adding a spare wheel to my GC680. Not wishing to go for the off road look I’m planning to do more or less OEM.

Question 1, Does anyone know if this will be a problem as my van has the factory fitted VW tow bar with the 4 bolt towball.

Question 2, I have also found items described as “Spare Wheel Cover” 7C0825213A (Left) 7C0825214A (Right). Does anyone know if this is required?
The previous post on here which contained a list of parts fitted by the VW dealer never mentioned these items. Anyone with an underslung spare wheel fitted could you have a look to see if there are any plastic cover parts beneath or around the spare wheel? Thanks!

For the spare wheel, to keep the same rolling dimension as the 235/60R17 alloys, tyre size should be 205/75R16 on the 2N0601027L/J wheel. I have just ordered a delivery miles new for £59.95 from e-bay. I believe wheel 2N0601027L is rated 1000kg, 2N0601027J is rated 1200Kg. There are still 2 more available on e-bay as I type.

I have obtained the list below from a previous post, and 0% discount price from TPS:

7C0803660BF SPARE WHEEL BRACKET AND CABLE £166.80

7C0012163B WHEEL WRENCH BAR EXTENSION (TO RELEASE SPARE WHEEL) £12.50

7C0012218 WHEEL WRENCH £26.20

2N0601027L SPARE STEEL WHEEL £140 (£59.95 EBAY) (Search: "Vw Crafter/MAN TGE 16” Steel Wheel Silver 5x120 2N0601027J *Delivery Miles*")

7C0805350F REBOUND STRAP £68.88

7 X N0195308 M8X25 FLANGED HEX BOLTS (I THINK MIGHT BE INCLUDED WITH SPARE WHEEL BRACKET AND CABLE, SO PERHAPS NOT REQUIRED AS A SEPERATE ITEM)

1 X N10714101 M10 X 25 FLANGED HEX BOLT

205/75R16 C TYPE VAN LOAD TYRE

2N0011031E JACK - SEARCH EBAY "Crafter-Sprinter Bottle Jack VW Crafter SC SZ SX Bottle Jack 3500KG Genuine Red" NEW £79.90 (Still available)

I had the underslung spare wheel dealer fitted on our first GC, and was very happy with it. This is the list of parts. No wheel cover, and it’s a steel wheel. We didn’t have tow bar though.

I didn't fit those extra 2 parts when I retrofitted a spare to my GC600 - having googled them I suspect they are for improved airflow under the van round the wheel.

The tyre needs to be at least a 115 load rating.

You might want to check that the bracket and cable is correct for a 680, I know it is ok for a 600 but understand that some crafters have the spare further away from the back of the van - not sure if thats the chassis cab models or the long wheelbase.

Thanks for info on wheels, I got one of crafter 1050kg rated wheels and tyres last year, but never been happy with it as not load rated, fine for front axle but not rear.
bought one of the 1200kg versions just now. Couldnt find any listed last year.

Oh I got the winch assembly and winding tool from a chap converting crafters to campers, I have factory towbar and it fitted OK.
there are two possible positions it bolts into becuase there are 6 bolt holes. I chose rear location becuase I thought the antiroll bar might have touched the tyre otherwise

That's good to know Andrew! Looking underneath there doesn't seem anything from the towbar to be in the way, but wasn't so sure around the hidden area of the panel by the rear doors.
A lot of the second hand wheels on ebay seem to be of the lower load rating, but I zoomed in on the ones for sale to confirm that they are 1200Kg, so just waiting for mine to arrive.
Can I ask you if you found fitting straightforward, and more or less obvious where everything goes? I haven't found any guides as such, but I'm not so bad with spanners so with luck I'll figure it out, but if there is anything to watch out for would be appreciated. Good tip about 2 possible positions!

When you are reasonably sure about the part numbers go to your nearest MAN dealer and price those items. MAN parts people can cross reference VW parts and supply without problem, the actual parts will have VW numbers on them, the packaging that they come in will be labelled MAN / Neoplan. You will be pleasantly surprised at the price difference for exactly the same items, anything up to half VW price!!
If you do this be kind to others on here by publishing the MAN part numbers and approximate price.

Interesting! Never thought of that! I think there is a dealer here, but not sure if they only do trucks. I'll give them a call on Monday!

I think you will find that all MAN dealers now include the TGE range although some may be small off-shoots of a larger organisation and have their parts ordered by the parent workshop. That is how my local one works.

I've had parts for my TGE from my local MAN dealer and also priced the same items from my local VW dealer so know the difference in price. You may find that your MAN dealer (I linked the one in Carlisle in my previous post assuming your location under your avatar) is very much more basic than the flash show room of a VW Van Centre. By the way did you know that VW car dealers are now able to supply van parts unless that item needs coding to the vehicle but the price will be the same at either.

If you are a Face Book user you will see others opinion of buying from MAN here.

Apart from me at first using the 4 bolt holes closest to front of vehicle, then realizing the antiroll bar was going to be very close to tyre and might touch it during suspension movement, then having to remove the 4 bolts and use the 4 rear most holes of the 6, I don’t recall any issues. The rest seemed obvious and easy to fit if I recall correctly.

Thanks for all your info, I've ordered that rim and jack (£55) from ebay, I can't find a used support W7C0 803 660. Dealer has quoted me a few weeks ago, do we need different wheel bolts??

What is rebound strap W7C0 805350 and how does it fit or what does it do.
Is there a storage location for the bottle jack. Why must we go for a skinny tyre?

Just a note on the red bottle Jack at £55 on eBay…..if it’s the same seller that I enquired with, it does not come with the handle to crank up the bottle Jack. The seller had “elite” in his name. Ignore if you got it elsewhere

rebound strap is bolted to the chassis at one end & to the wheel at the other, its a safety strap to stop your wheel falling off if the cable is lowered slightly.

The jack should fit under the passenger footwell floor along with the rest of the toolkit - did you check there to see if you had anything before buying?

No, I'll go look now, under the floor or under the seat??

WOW, I have a limited tool kit and somewhere to store jack, I guess I'll need to order a bar to work jack and a "T" brace/bar, what about the wheel bolts? are they the same?

Fingers crossed it comes with the handle. It is a different seller at £79. Will find out with luck tomorrow. The first one mysteriously went missing on the way to the depot in a Yodel van!

Skinny tyre is just so the 16" steel wheel has the same rolling circumference as the standard 235/60R17 alloy wheel to avoid confusing the ABS / ESP. Those that go for the offroad look fit a standard wheel on the back.

Confused, I guess the standard 235, tyre will fit on that rim (6.5 inch), so why fit a skinnier tyre.
And the wheel bolts, have you found out about those. They were different on Sprinters with steel and alloys.

What are you saying is a standard 235 tyre, the standard alloy wheels are 17” the steel spare is typically a 16”

Duh, just checked and GC is 17 inch, my Sprinter camper is 235/65/16.
So 205/75R16 has the same rolling circumference as original GC.

I have just fitted my 205/75 R16 spare underslung spare wheel on my 680 using the front bolt holes and there is clearance between the anti roll bar / axle. I used the front bolt holes to bring the weight of the spare wheel nearer the rear axle so less over hanging weight.

If anyone has any doubts about which holes the factory fit the spare wheel carrier in I can look under my TGE which came as original with it fitted.
Don't ask me to look on a wet day though :).

Yeah that would be good to know (when it’s a dry day!)
Sounds like forward bolts holes work ok from what Topsy posted. I too would prefer weight slightly further forward closer to axle
