Following on from a friends misfortune with DPF, installed an app which provides monitoring via CarPlay. Carista dongle and a pay once app from the App Store very happy so far allows tracking of soot levels and shows an alert when regen is taking place but cannot force a regen IMG_6589.jpeg

Very useful. What is the app please?

VAG DPF in the app store

This intrigues me. Can someone explain the value of the above app, as I suspect i'm missing something out and that bugs me :D .

If DPF regen is automatic based on engine need and the fans run on shut down if mid-DPF-cycle, what's the benefit of the above?

For me it’s two fold, curiosity and peace of mind. I want to understand the function of the systems (EGR, DPF etc) and to understand the impact of short journeys. I also want to know when it is beneficial to do a longer run to allow a full regen cycle to complete, rather than having it stop so helps with planning.

I have also seen a friend stranded by a dpf fault in a new van, and by the time a warning light comes on to say there is an issue, it’s too late. It’s not for everyone but it’s the same reason I added a spare wheel, for me better to have and not need etc.

$4.99 one time purchase. Seems like an excellent investment. Found myself turning off the motor mid regen without realising. I want to avoid a repeat performance and this will give a headsup when region will occur or as Tarquers says an opportunity to force it during a longer run.

Do you need the software for Carista to be installed too, with the monthly service fee ?

And what’s the difference between the carista gen2 and Evo?

The EVO seems to be an upgraded version to the original unit. Says it's faster with a broader range of vehicle compatibility. Personally I don't see any advantage for us (Transporters) to pay 2x the price

Oh for a Tsi California. Oh but wait, the California Concept has a Tsi variant.

But wait, you think your TSI engine isn't prone to carbon buildup..... think again. All direct injection engines suffer this problem. Big issue with the flat 6 Porsche engine, same for the Audi V8. Loads of examples on VWVortex regarding TSI. At least the Transporter has a system to deal with the problem. Good luck with your TSI.

With the journeys that I make the TSI will suit me fine, and I won't have to worry about Adblue faults or a replacement DPF . Use it or lose it is a good rule of thumb for diesels and less so for petrol plus the saving on ULEZ both in the UK and continent will help.

No it just uses the device.
This has been a very helpful post/thread - thank you. So to be clear one just needs to purchase the Carista dongle, plug into OBD port and then 'just' download the DPF for VAG app and NOT the Carista app (unless one wanted those extra features)

Correct.

Thank you, WelshGas

I purchased carista device and downloaded the software but free only. I also bought the VAG DPF app. When you plug in carista you get a red light for power and then when you connect via Bluetooth you see communication as a flashing blue light.

It is important to select the correct engine type so that the CANbus data is correctly interpreted.

It’s a passive device so you cannot force a regen, paid carista for that but despite limitations worth the money.

Thanks - that's helpful and good to know.

Any suggestions on which would be my correct engine type out of the options below - I have a MY2023 204 PS 2.0 TDI?

When you have the app connected it showed the correct engine type in bottom left which for me was group 3. Easy enough to change groups until you get the right info.

Apparently there is a sticker showing the number but could not find on my 2021.
