Hello peeps

Does anyone have any experience of disassembling and painting either the kylie or quasi style VW bike racks?

I want a matt black one to go on my Cali but im torn between which one to buy ( and then spray)

Is one easier than the other to take apart , spray and reassemble?

Thanks

Marcus

I have had a kylie powdercoated, it came apart easily. There was list somewhere of the stainless rivet sizes you need.

I'd expect paint would chip easily unless you are doing it in 2k paint.

Have you looked at the Thule Wanderway rack, it is black / silver and looks good/ poss easier to paint the silver parts black ?

Easier to buy the Fiamma rack - it's available in black, extendable from 2 to 4 bikes, best bit is that the arms etc are readily available if you need to replace anything.

I have a Quasi rack that i had anodised.
I did quite a bit of research on the forum before getting it done and that appeared to be the best way of coating it, less likely to chip etc.

I’m not 100% sure, but i may sell it…

Let me know if you‘re interested and I’ll think about it properly

Can you point to any instructions on what you need to replace after taking it apart? What are the most tricky bits?

And if you don’t mind sharing; where did you get it anodised and how much did it cost?

It’s not too bad to strip down and reassemble but you do need the correct rivets which are quite chunky so you’ll probably need a bigger than average hand riveter too.

The rivets I used were 6.4mm Metric Aluminium/Steel Black Pop Dome Head Rivets (Length) 18mm from Spalding fasteners and were about £16 for a pack

I believe you can get new racks in black from a website called T5 Upgrades but I think they’re over £900.

I bought a second hand rack, stripped it down and had it anodised. The anodising cost about £130 but mine had to be done twice because it wasn’t a great job (long story).

I found local metal finishers/anodisers on Google. It’s a good project to do yourself if you have the time.

How much are looking for and do you have any pictures of it. I’m about 2hrs away so it’s doable

Thanks
