Hello Everyone

I have a 6.1 ocean.

Is there anyway you can run the air con with the ignition on without the sidelight/daylights coming on also.

Would like to cool the van down with a blast of air con but don’t want to annoy the neighbours.

Thanks in advance !!

The quick answer is No. The AirCon will only work with the engine running and that automatically puts the DRLs on.
The DRLs are basically a warning to others that the vehicle is live and capable of moving.

T5.1 - You can switch the DRL's off with Carista. Would assume T6 is the same.

I’ve tried that on mine with Carista. Didn’t work. Did you manage to get it to work?

I bought one of these (without the battery as I have 200AH Lithium in the van) and it works great to keep me cool. It's not as strong as a roof mounted AC, but cool enough! Uses between 150-250 watts.

I tried with Carista and it didn’t work on my 6.1. Thinking that it’s a protected safety feature by VW.

I think they are now a Legal requirement and have been for some years. Prior to the date of the Legal requirement manufacturers were fitting them and you were able to switch them off, but not now.

Have just tested and DRL can be switched off on T5.1 with Carista. Photos with engine running before & after activating (photos came in wrong order, but you get the idea, once DRL ‘off’ selected, then no lights in rotary knob headlight 0’ setting); 41D03A14-10E3-45C6-937A-99E6CAE6669B.pngA0D41C71-0410-4D6B-A6D4-3EE7C01921C6.jpegCDD66E01-08BC-4D9D-BDEA-DBA1A67D61E1.jpeg988AB5A2-F6C1-4009-B21D-22FB85C415FF.jpegEFC2EFEB-E5F8-4B52-8C0F-84B497F04FB8.jpeg2245248A-0AE2-42B0-8C7C-29429009276D.jpeg3B13A467-DC01-4AB0-B9E0-61BB0E60D929.jpeg

Doesn’t work on my 5.1

It's the engine noise that will mostly annoy the neighbors, and get you into trouble.

Just an idea/info: the 'rest' button ventilates for a maximum of 30 minutes after you have switched off the engine/ after driving.
It uses the residual heat from the engine if your air conditioner was set to heating and ventilates otherwise. You will not have really cooled air, it will just ventilate for a while. Real air conditioning when stationary does not work without the motor running.
I have not tested this button yet and I suppose it works better when using the residual heat than ventilate with the rest of the ‘cold’ air from the pipes.
Anyway, the idea of briefly cooling the van with the aircon won't do much as it will immediately return to the temperature of the environment, not cooler. This is my idea on this and you do what you want of course.

It is a real shame that they didn’t move to an electric AC pump, I would assume a retro fit would be prohibitively difficult or expensive.

I've set my 6.1 to operate DRLs only when the handbrake is off. Obd11.

Good idea!
Any instructions on how you did this?
OBD 11 has so called 'apps' -- effectively a bunch of settings bunched together and costing 50p or so in their currency. One can also do long coding the old fashioned way but in this case I just fired up the 'app'.

I must ask: which app?
Thanks in advance.

I believe early T5.1 DRLs are directly wired to come on as soon as the ignition is switched on and subsequently Carista or other apps would be unable to toggle the lights ON/OFF.
Later T5.1s have the DRLs controlled by the BCM and therefore can be altered via the above apps.
Ours is a 2011 model and is directly wired so Carista won't touch it.

I have this thing: https://obdeleven.com/en/home/187-stand-alone-0758277987851.html and the accompanying android app. Within the android app there are setting collections confusingly called 'apps'. Carista, VCDS etc all do pretty much the same thing. Your choice of OS may limit your options. As mentioned older vehicles have less stuff controlled by BCM. My experience is only with a T6.1.
