Engine recorded as 138BHP on HPI check but it is 112BHP - any legit reason why?

Hi All

Newbie here who is looking for their first Cali.

I went to view a 2012 reg Beach today. I HPI checked the van in advance and also got an insurance quote before viewing. The van came back as as 138BHP / 6 speed variant (the engine I wanted). The HPI check was clear.

However, when I went to view it today, it's only a 5 speed and the engine code is CAAD which I understand is 112BHP. This engine code is correct on the log book (along with power stated as 84KW), and the VIN in the window matches the log book.

Is there any legitimate reason why this discrepancy would exist? And if I did still want to purchase (assuming I'm willing to go for a different engine / box from the one I wanted), then is there any way to correct the details that come back on HPI/Insurance searches so I don't have any resale issues at a later date?

Or would you walk away from the puchase...

Thanks in advance
Robin

I suspect someone filled in the forms incorrectly. My 2018 T6 is, and confirmed by VW, a T30 model (3000kg max weight). However my DVLA V5 says it is a T32 although with the T30 3000kg max weight. I have tried to get DVLA to change the description but they say they can't. When insuring I tell this to the insurer and they are not fussed as the max weight is correct. They say that this type of incorrect info on DVLA v5s is quite common and that trying to change/correct it is near impossible. So I suspect your vehicle has been mis-claisified. Go with what VW (VIN number) says it is.

Thanks Wildcamper for your reply - my main concern is whether its legitimate, which I suspect it is, and as you say there's probably been some incorrect information supplied at some point in the past.

- I never knew they did the 114PS.

- I think with this sort of age Cali the safest bet is 140PS.

- The 180PS (bi turbo) has well trodden discussion centred around the EGR valve corroding the bits finding their way in to the bores.
Starting with high and ever increasing oil consumption.
It seems ambiguous to track down when builds safely supersede that depending on what and where you read certain stuff. It seems mainly 2010/2011 but as I say ambiguity exists.
Try not to bog this thread down in that thought, there are plenty of other threads discussing it.

2012 Beach was available with 114ps 5 speed box and 140ps 6 speed box. The 180 Biturbo engine wasn't available in the UK on the Beach.
Think the 114 was also badged as 'Bluemotion'. 2012 was the first time the Beach was available in the UK so I think there was a lot of confusion with registering them.
My 140 (6 speed) 2012 Beach appears on some databases as Bluemotion but that was never an option on the 140s. I have even had it appearing as a Vivaro on one insurance lookup. (and the agent insisted I was mistaken as his system is never wrong).

The 140 was Bluemotion by the time the 2014 brochure came out IMG_1189.jpg

Thanks everyone for your replies. It's definitely a 114 Bluemotion, and the V5 correctly states the power and that it is a California Beach TDI, with body type Motor Caravan. I just can't understand why some databases list it as a 140/6 speed, but as has been stated, there could have been some confusion and misinformation somewhere along the line.

It all seems genuine to me - docs, VIN etc all stack up. I was wanting a 140 but I may still consider this van if I can get it for a good price, it seems to be well looked after.

You could consider chiptuning the 114hp engine, apparently they can get it to 175hp.

To add to my previous post, I used ATM Chiptuning before in the past on my Audi A3 2.0TFSI.

This company claims the 114hp engine is the same as the 140hp engine only electronically limited. They limit the torque however to 350nm because of the 5-speed gearbox.

Our 2012 140 is ‘bluemotion’…just means it suggests when to change gear on the display.

Yeah I've read the engines are good for tuning, but I don't think I'd risk it with the 5 speed box as they don't seem to be as capable of handling the extra power!

And has stop start, lower rolling resistance tyres when new & a few other bits, can't remember exactly what.

@YorkshireCali go to your local VW dealer, a VW car dealer will do, and visit the trade parts counter and ask for a Car Data Print of your VIN number. You should get a four or five page printout of exactly how the vehicle was built.
If the dealer won't do that for you then join the T6 Forum https://www.t6forum.com/ and ask @Pauly to do it for you via a PM. He will send the same data back to you privately.

No start stop on ours, that came later I think.
Our July 2014 140 Beach has start/stop. It is a pretty good system TBH and I like thinking I might be saving fuel and emissions in traffic…

I think the very early/first Beaches to the UK were almost all 114ps, but might be wrong. The 140ps is great and I am sure the 114ps will be too. If it a good van, it checks out and is the right price, then go for it and start enjoying Cali life.

When the Beach was introduced into the UK all the California dealers had to have one as a demonstrator. By the time I was looking to buy at the end of 2012 these were coming onto the market. Almost all were 114ps (in Sunny yellow). I wasn’t specifically looking for a 140 but that was what I found.
At the time I was also considering getting a van and having it converted, most of those were 102 ps. A few at 140. Don’t think the 114 was ever offered in the Transporter van? Maybe that’s what caused confusion with registrations.
Blue motion was definitely more than just gear change indicator. As above it was stop start, tyres etc.

Early Beach’s didn’t have electric hookup either, that came a few years later.

Great thanks for the advice! That's a good idea

I wondered why it didn't have hook up - explains why!
