Windscreen question

Got a big crack in my windscreen and need a replacement. Autoglass want to know if I have a camera, I’m not sure. My Cali is a 69 plate and all I have is auto wipers.

Please could someone clarify.

Not a camera but a rain sensor.
Depends if they know what they mean by a "camera".
There should be a sticker, bottom R corner with the VW glass code.

Thanks, would the rain sensor require a recalibration?

I am sorry but if Autoglass doesn't know, look for another branch! How can they not know what windscreen to fit, it's their job! I'd be worried!

Some do. Check with VW. Autoglass should be capable of doing that as many vehicles have that function nowadays.

Not really. Some aftermarket crash cameras can be glued to screen etc.

Thanks, I can take to Autoglass but it then has to be left with them for three hours if they can come to my house or workplace it’s much easier, calibration can only be done at their workshop.

You dont need to calibrate a rain sensor - it isn’t actually a camera but an LED or infra red light sensor that picks up scatter from raindrops. Cameras are part of automatic driver assistance for emergency braking, adaptive cruise etc. and located at the top centre of the windscreen. If you dont have them you dont need workshop calibration.

Thanks, everyone. All sorted now and new windscreen on order as currently out of stock. It can be done at my house so fingers crossed it all goes to plan.

After they fitting a genuine OEM windscreen? Years ago I had a copy windscreen fitted, it didn't have a constant curvature which meant the windscreen wipers cleaned some areas and skimmed over others! Even if you have to contribute towards the cost I would get an OEM fitted.

If to OP speaks to their insurer and tells them the reason an original Screen, is required, particularly the ability to affect other systems on the vehicle, they should authorise an Original Screen, Doing the job twice is in no ones intrest.

I agree, if possible its the best option. I asked for an OEM screen replacement on mine and insurers agreed, although I think they are more inclined to do that with vehicles under three years old.

I’ve had a number of windscreens fitted to my previous T5 and none of them were OEM and all were fine (they just kept getting hit hard by stones). Right now I’m going to get whatever I can, I need it quickly because as soon as my children break up for the summer hols we’re off to France.

I had my screen fixed by Autoglass last week. Mine is a 67 plate Cali with heated windscreen, rain sensor and auto dipping headlights. Our centre sensor looks just like yours. They knew that already from the reg and Vin number.
I live in a narrow street and thought it would be too much of a risk to do it in the street as they offered, so I asked for their nearest "service centre". It was ½ an hour from my home so not an issue. I was booked in early and they have all the equipment on site to do it easily if they do encounter any problems. It took under 3/4 of an hour to remove the screen and fit the new one and then it was left for a further 3/4 of an hour for the adhesive to cure. I imagine when the say camera they are asking if you have a dash cam as they will remove them but not refix them.
I went for the offered Pilkington one not VW as they are, apparently, all made by the same firm and your excess will go up by probably £200 if you insist on VW made.
Everything seems to work OK afterwards and a friend in the trade said it appeared to be a good job.
