Has anyone else had their Brexit related posts deleted? I’ve noticed that when someone posts something pro-Brexit and you correct their factual inaccuracies, the post seems to disappear quite quickly. It’s happened to me three or four times now. I stick to the known facts and the posts are perfectly polite, but this makes no difference. I’m a journalist who has worked for most of the national papers, two broadcasters and a ‘major streaming service‘ but I’ve never been censored in this way before… I guess this thread won’t last long! And it’s probably time for me to seek out new campervan-related websites.

Probably best to keep away from the subject.

You probably wouldn't last long on a Brexit discussion forum talking about camper vans.

are you saying that pro brexit posts are erased and silenced but remainer posts are tolerated ? well i've never noticed that anywhere before .not just brexit, also anti vax or lockdown and anti climate change posts seem to go same way. its like there's some sort of global narrative going on somewhere .

Hi Orbital, I see you joined forum in 2019 so you won't have seen the 'wide ranging and lively discussions' on here for more than a year following the 2016 vote. Unfortunately it did become pretty acrimonious. And various threads started since then that have got into Brexit-related angles have frequently gone the same way and descended into personal insults.

The "Three Cocks" section of the site is where most of those threads have ended up, rather than being deleted completely although I think some have been (I may be wrong on that).

Some forum users feel that all 'political' (however defined) topics are inappropriate on a campervan forum. Others see it as more of a 'community' and are happy to engage on contentious subjects including Brexit, alongside the umpteenth thread about 2010/11 T5 oil consumption or drive-away awnings.

I don’t think it is just you. Entire threads and some individual posts seem to have been removed.

From my own experience it’s just ‘ant-Brexit’ posts that are being deleted. From time to time, when someone posts something pro-Brexit then I‘ve simply corrected the factual mistake. It happened a few days ago when someone claimed that the queues at Dover weren’t a result of Brexit. I pointed out this was predicted by the Remain camp along with a 15-20 percent reduction in our standard of living etc. Curiously, the posts that have been deleted were in response to claims made by a certain Welsh gentleman who likes gas. I‘ve only responded three or four times on the subject in three years so it’s hardly a personal hobby horse. Like most people, I visit the site for useful info and contribute where I can. For example I’m currently compiling the results of a 15,000 mile ‘experiment’ that compares premium to ordinary diesel. I’m sure that will be equally controversial!

I think they lost the whole thread!

To be fair it’s much nicer chatting about vans than discovering some people ‘s politics.

now that is interesting

I understand that sometimes it is necessary to kill threads that are becoming abusive or straying into inappropriate areas. What I don’t get is that no explanation is given.

The Original Thread poster, if he deletes the 1st post, deletes the whole thread.

Well looking at the demographic of Cali buyers (mostly middle-aged white folk with plenty of cash), it’s hardly surprising that anything anti brexit is not going to go down well!

Truthful Anti-Brexit.

Even the thread compmaing about the deleted thread got blocked because someone clearly didn't get the joke

I voted against drive away awnings but I still tolerate those who want to discuss it. All those claims about convenience and space, but what they don't tell you is about the size of the bag it goes in!

The Original Thread poster, if he deletes the 1st post, deletes the whole thread.
So if the OP doesn't think they're winning the argument after 10 pages of posts by others, they can censor everyone else? That's weird.

Forums are a funny old world and we like to assume our shared passion of Cali’s means we are all like minded and share other interests too.

Unfortunately, as is the way in life, outside of Calis (and sometimes inside them too!) opinions differ on a variety of subjects.

There is very little room in todays world it seems for middle grounds and many things are set in the extremes, with no real leeway to have open and honest discussions. Our ability to manage entrenched positions is limited with very few people prepared to move from their hilltop, whichever it is. Leading to snark, ill humour and arguments. The likely answer for the OP’s thread was “probably a bit of both” - but no-one wants to hear that. Doesnt make a “fun” conversation.

Add to that some bored, active and impish members of this forum, you end up in losing a lot in translation between what is sometimes meant as tongue in cheek humour vs outright bad manners.

Like many others I’m here for the Cali chat and advice, with some of the “imps” being the best for that advice, which I appreciate. When it strays out of that, on either side, IMHO, it all has no place here. Go to twitter, Reddit of 4Chan for that sort of slanging match which usually ends up in a pureplay two sided troll fest With zero room for nuance. I for one appreciate the admins thankless task of having to manage that, whatever their own views, and moving those conversations to the dark zone.

Ah I'm with you brother but 51% of forum users are Pro-Awning so your views are immaterial.

I'll get my coat.

They could, but in this case the question posed was related to Ferry travel from Portsmouth. Would there be similar delays as there were at Dover?
Up until Post 11, all the posts were related to that question. THEN an incorrect statement regarding the cause of the delays at Dover, and the rest is history.

Maybe we should have an "agreed" list on contentious subjects.
The items always bound to spark lively debate.

I'll make a start..............

Drive Away Awnings
Porta Potti
4Motion (Don't even go there with Diff Lock)
Bungee cord
Spare safe (Legolandgate)
Saggy rear end (Especially after fitting 30mm lowering springs)

Thats sounds like enough to get things started - What have I done ! :talktothehand
