Seriously though, let's wait and see what the actual rules are. The statement actually said:

"...the government is extending the VAT relief available for the installation of energy saving materials (ESMs)... The government will also increase the relief further by introducing a time-limited zero rate for the installation of ESMs."

I suspect that's going to be aimed at domestic installations and may not apply to solar panels for vehicles. (Actually, that's still of big personal interest as we've ordered a heat pump to go in in May, however I suspect VAT relief on the installation will be complicated by the various elements of the project which will involve retaining the existing gas boiler in tandem. With these government schemes, the devil is ALWAYS in the detail.)

No such thing as a free lunch, eh!

Let’s hope it’s on all panels as I’m about to buy a posh one for my new joker (big saving too if it is).

Brilliant! Just about to have some panels fitted on the house.

I see the last headline regarding solar panels being VAT free was preceded by ‘home owners installing …’

Maybe I want to install lots of 110w flexi panels on my home ….

Like the idea of the government trying to save the planet and help the poor keep warm potentially subsidising owners of £90k Californias! I await the details before I call Roger!

Hopefully that just means not commercial, so I’m still keeping my fingers crossed

I reached out to Roger today about this as considering fitting a panel to my Beach.

Sadly his view is that it is only reducing the current 5% rate to ZERO for Household installations, and is only applicable on the material costs - so in his view there is no change for his products and services.

Just keep an eye on what sunstore and bardens do as they are good suppliers of portable panels, give it chance to let the dust to settle:thumb
Could be same as petrol stations they don’t rush to alter things!

“This update will zero-rate the installation of energy saving materials in domestic properties and “relevant residential purpose” buildings, such as care homes.”

Your brave.

I looked at an ASHP recently and it worked out more expensive to run against my 20yr old boiler (78% efficent). Had my annual consumption figures and latest costs so an easy calculation. Surpised me.

If you are on mains gas there is no economic benefit and in fact it will cost us more in bills for the time being. We're doing it because it will save about 5 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, which will partially offset some of the more selfish aspects of our lifestyle eg motorsport (... and Cali ownership, obvs. ;) ).

Even after the April price cap rise, mains gas will still be about a quarter of the price of mains electricity, while a heat pump isn't going to achieve a real world efficiency of anything close to 400% to break even (and that's without the capital cost). Until the fuel price ratio changes, heat pumps will only be economically attractive to people who are off the gas grid and otherwise having to heat with oil.

Valid point about being off grid.

It's a reduction in domestic solar installations from 5% VAT to 0%. Doesn't affect me in any way - I'd love not to have to charge VAT as I actually absorb around half of the "hit" on sales.
