Good morning all,
Question to people who are running none standard tyre size in particular off road tyres. What have you done regarding the spare wheel?

I’m running Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus tyres (225/65/17) which means the standard 235/55/17 tyre on the spare is undersized.

Do you still intend to use the spare or have you an alternative solution?

All depends if you have a 4Motion or not.
4Motion requires same wheel/tyre circumference on each wheel or you could be in for damage to 4Motion drive train.
FWD you could get away with different wheel/tyre circumference on rear axle only but limited distance/limited speed.

Have you actually tried fitting a wheel in the spare carrier?

I've got a 235/60/17 in mine with a bit of clearance and it may be possible to get your 225/65/17 in. Perhaps a part worn tyre one would go in.

Something like this eg (102 load Ok as a spare)

Have you tried fitting a 225/65/17 underneath? from memory there is a little bit of room to go higher profile, its the width of the spare tyre thats more of a problem, the wider the tyre, the less ground clearance you have.

I have 4Motion and aware of the requirement to use a similar size tyre. This is why I’ve asked for peoples help. It’s a struggle to get the standard spare in the carrier and I don’t think this size would fit without some modifications which I don’t really want to do unless there is a suitable alternative solution.

The other option is to carry tyre sealant I suppose but we all know of the issues this can cause?

Tyre threads?
I have a spare, tyre threads and Gunk. Often travel to Scandinavia and tyre shops are a little thin on the ground.

What about dropping the pressure in the spare tyre and carry a 12v pump.

I had the same size BFG 225/65/17 under my old T6 4motion joker, will fit if you let out around 5psi:thumb

I was thinking of getting an additional 17" spare and another 225/65/17 tyre. Debaiting on a low cost tyre or another Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus. With it being a spare only I'm not sure what to do?

If it was the same tyre then you could swap out and continue at normal speeds etc. If it was a different make then treat it as a space saver, limited speed limited distance.
If your present tyres are unidirectional then treat any spare as a space saver as 50% of the time it will be wrong or 100% if it is bidirectional.

Thanks for the reply. This may sound like a daft question but I did wonder if two different tyres that are stated as the same size would be the same as my tyre is an off road tyre. I haven't actually been able to do a visual comparison to confirm this.

So for the purpose of a spare only and which allows you to continue at a more cautious speed, any 225/65/17 tyre which has a suitable load rating would be ok?

Then, when you inevitably get a puncture or find one of your tyres is more worn and needs replacing, swap things around so that you have 2 new tyres on same axle and the leftover part worn becomes the spare. Also means you can order replacement at cheapest price online rather than have to rush and end up spending over the odds from whichever tyre place has them in stock immediately.

That could work if your tyres are bi-directional. Many are not.

In reality tyre outer diameter varies between brands and season design.

eg
I changed from summer tread to all season tread and lost just over 1MPH road speed@ 70MPH indicated (Sat Nav info)

I'd expect off road tyres to have more tread depth and therefore a greater outer diameter than summer tyres.
Offroad tyres can have up 13mm tread depth, Summer up to 8mm and in the case of Michelin All Season 7mm when new.
 
Can i ask a question about your pirelli at tyres - we are in greece at moment having traveled 4000 miles through the balkans and albania - my continental road tyres great on the tarmac have struggled on wet tarmac steep hills, loose stuff and off road tracks - what are the pirellis like

Hi,
I have had the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus tyres fitted for 11 months now and my first trip was into Eastern Germany to visit my partners family (800+ miles one way) and TBH, they were fantastic. Mainly motorway driving but we did have to lightly venture off road for some one night stopovers etc. Very slight increase in road noise and fuel consumption but nothing that plays on your mind every time you drive.
Several holidays since including the Lakes, France etc with mixed road conditions and they are IMO an extremely good tyre.
I believe the 235/55/17 is more widely available but as I have a lowered Cali, the 225 works well. Followed the advice and purchased from Bognor Motors.

I decided to buy a new spare wheel and fitted the same tyre which I use for the bigger journeys. I attached the spare to the top of our trailer for the France trip this summer. I also still have the original spare under the vehicle for shorter trips.
Still looking into a system which I can fit the spare on the tailgate.

The Hess Rail 01 looks a great tailgate spare wheel carrier. But is close to £1450 that’s without the updated tailgate struts which are needed, to hold the weight of the tyre up!
I’m also looking into which spare wheel carrier to have on the rear of the Ocean.
Very expensive options if not going under slung.

As I’d want to drive at motorway speeds to get a tyre changed.

Have a look at this channel as he's just starting a T6 swamper and looking into tailgate spare wheel options.
