Oil Level..

Firstly, apologies if I am doing something wrong!

OK, so thought I better check the oil level, the vehicle had oil & filter literally three weeks or so back. But keen to check level myself.

Engine hot, drove to a level carpark, left it for perhaps 1hr and checked old level before we drive off. So dipstick out, wiped clean, re-inserted and withdrew (quickly) and its measuring over full. So repeated the process three times and each time was showing over the full mark..??

Any thoughts?

It's a new CFCA engine 25,000 miles ago with new DPF at same time too.

Did you check the oil after the sevice? maybe the overfilled it ?
T5 180 ..i.e. biturbo. Usually the problem is the oil vanishing quickly...

Have read about oil dilution, hoping this is not the case (will check the dipstick for diesel smell).. otherwise I think it will probably be overfilling!! Not impressed

Most likely it’s over filled at the recent service, it often happens. Had it occur on a few cars, with some consequences (See later). When filling, and checking the level, the van should be on a level surface. If supported on hydraulic jacks/ ramps this isn’t always the case. You’d have mentioned if the oil appears creamy, so we can rule out water ingress. I’d also check the level when stone cold. If it’s more than a little bit over max fill take it back to your service centre and have them drop some out, as it’s not good for the engine. The oil can burn on the cylinder bores. Happened to a Merc I ran.

My handbook, 2014, said wait 5 mins from warm engine Off to check oil, not 1 hr. Is yours different?

It is good practice to re-check oil levels after any service - do you really trust those guys? Overfilling can over-pressurize the engine, creating leaks on engine seals and pushing oil up into the cylinder bores and pushing oil downstream of the exhaust wheree it can compromise the DPF.

Yeah.. taught many many years ago to check oil level prior to starting the engine.. that was before engine management systems we have today! Although, it still stands though as a good practice really.

Yesterday at the garage we extracted the surplus - all good now and I'll keep an eye on it!

No hint of diesel smell either.
