Had our wonderful Cali Bert 12 weeks and loving him, off to the NC500 next week. While doing checks for our trip I’ve noticed quite bad rust on one of the roof brackets that’s bolted to the roof itself , have attached pictures of both sides, surely this must have had rust on it 16 weeks ago during the building process
Anyone else have this problem

I’ve seen a few on the forum but that looks bad. I’d be straight back to the dealer.

Not acceptable. I would make sure this is logged and remedied by the dealership asap.

Certainly be taking that back, that’s not normal at all.

looks like a faulty part.

I hed the same problem! I bring it back in they say that they will order the parts...
When I hed it back and I checkt it they just put like "Grey paint" over it.
I Gues anti corrosion but still...

You guys think I must to let it changed?

I wouldn't"t accept that. Clearly there is a batch of incorrectly galvanised components in the poptop mechanism. Go to a different dealer.

Concur with that our van 2016 no rust like that. ? Change in production which has not worked in the field/real world.

Are you seriously telling me a main dealer did that….???
What shower of sheet thinks this is acceptable on a £60k+ van ?

I would ask the manager to come and look.
And ask them for a picture pointing to the part to send to VW Commercial support.
Get him to write they think that’s acceptable.
They need their genitalia putting in the chopping block / stretch rack.
Shocking !

Not acceptable

If the dealer told you they were going to fit new parts & they have not VWCV will take a very dim view of that, essentially that is fraud on the part of the dealer!

did the dealer provide any warranty paperwork ?

I wonder if VWCV have been charged for the work the dealer was supposed to carry out ? (I.e. if it was a warranty claim) which could get them struck off from VW, which would be a further case of fraud if they had.
The existing rust bleed will permanently stain the paintwork if it hasn’t already?

I would insist, in the strongest possible terms that a proper decontamination of all paint work is carried out by a reputable third party, to remove the ferrous metal molecules from the paint, then a polish and treatment to re protect the paint. (A good detailing company will be able to advise accordingly, suggest you get a quote to be for armed)

clearly the part(s) showing any corrosion are faulty, not fit for the purpose they were designed (I.e. External mechanism subjected to weather should not rust if it were manufactured correctly, as is normal for an item subject to weathering ).
Clearly the remedy offered to date is not acceptable

In Belgium garage Mertens sint niklaas
I would be straight on to the main BE VW Commercial Importer D'ieteren to make a formal complaint. Apparently VW in the USA get all their vehicles from this dealer. My Coast is also ordered through this supplier.

And show them images of other owners who have shown premature corrosion on the poptop components. Your issue is not unique. Get it fixed properly and make sure they are going to cover any future problems even out of warranty, in writing. This could be an ongoing problem with parts from this supplier. I just checked mine (Nov '22 build) and so far so good.

Thanks everyone for the reaction's!
It give me the courage to go and handel this.
I was just not 100% sure and it felt strange how they handled me.
(sorry for my bad English)

@Kenisted I'm sorry for to interrupt your post but think we are in the same boat here ️

Good luck and let us know how you get on. For what these cost VW should be bending over backwards to make things right.

Thats rubbish. Mine are 8years old and no rust.

Oké so,
Vw garage call me after i send a complain to dieteren.

I can bring my Cali back to the garage and they gonne replace that part off under warranty.

The thing no is i don't trust this garage it's like they have 0 experience with vw California's, I'm scared they gonne damage the pop top beceaus it's just so fragile.

But hey they gonne fix it.
And I will have a replacement car for free... Waaw.

Thanks again peaple!

Photograph it before it goes in, including from inside with the roof up, to prove the condition everything is in before you send it in for repair. If there any problems, it will be easier to prove.

I don't see why you couldn't just take it to another Cali au fait VW dealer. Its warranty work afterall. I wouldn't let those guys anywhere near my pride and joy.
