£5K Fine for Traveling Abroad

This will make campsites even more rammed this year and I suspect campsites will keep putting prices up, I have tried to book a few sites and one of them was £60 per night whereas when we stayed there last year it was £40. I think I may stay at home this year in the garden

It is due to come into force in England next week as some other lockdown restrictions are eased.

Do we feel sorry for the campsite owners who like many others have suffered loss of income due to the pandemic, or is it all part of the "Rip Off Britain" mentality ?

We have friends who own a campsite and last summer was one of their most lucrative, so no I dont feel sorry for campsite owners.

Pubs have had it bad but will we be paying £10 per pint when they open? I dont think so

The £5k fine is only in place until travel abroad is permitted which could be as soon as mid May but that will also be subject to Countries permitting you in and possible introduction of Covid vaccination Passport (f some kind) with potential test and quarantine on return, Hotel or Home based.

Campsites are a Business and supply and demand pricing is a fact of life.
If you had a field would you allow free camping or charge the 'going' rate?

Supply & Demand. Nothing wrong with that.

Hopefully existing bookings will still be honoured, and not cancelled in order to free capacity to be rebooked at higher rates!

Agreed, but as usual when the government intervenes, the laws of economics become distorted. There’s a long thread here about the govt prohibiting people to camp outside camping sites. Then the entire chunk of overseas camping site removed. The oligopoly of British campsites have you by the balls.

Goodness me, since man beat another over the head with a club so anyone who could make eco-friendly, child-safe, non-bio clubs was in with a chance.

"My business has been screwed for a year but now it's bumper payback time and I'm putting my prices up 50% and if you don't like it, lump it".

Who's to blame them.

Existing booking I have at the quiet site is being 'honoured ' but with an additional 30 quid price hike. Equating to around 30%. I allowed them to keep my 90 sheets and rebook later then they go and do this to me. A price hike is fair enough but I think original bookings should be honoured at the original price paid. But that's not the case in this instance. I will be having a 'chat' with them about this. Its Getting to the stage where its cheaper to park in hotels and go get a sodding room!

I agree, The Quiet site is not exactly cheap to start with.

We looked into renting a house in Cornwall for a week, but the price was mental. Instead found a lovey hotel in the Lakes. Got their best room, breakfast and dinner included and it’s half the price of the holiday home...
Which means I can relax at a nice hotel being waited on hand and foot.
No brainer...

I'm still processing that image and it's not a pretty one.

But British campsites would seem a long way from an oligopoly, I'd assume the majority of them are individual enterprises.

If I was them I'd be charging what the market bears, but maybe offering some special rates to regulars.

As hotels and self catering will also presumably be charging peak rates across the whole season this year, it'll still probably be cheaper to stay on a campsite.

I tried to rally the locals back in 1999 to have the local private carparks bought back under compulsory purchase and run for non-profit...
Didn’t get much support at the time, because it was just locals trying to make a living.

Back then the price increased from £3.50 a day to £5. Think Puts was £6.
I bet it would get some support today. The locals are seething about the increases...
