Rear Spoiler Question

Hi,

I've purchased and ready to fit a genuine VW rear spoiler to my Cali, after reading threads on here and watching videos I've decided I'm fitting by bonding only as this seems to be adequate and really do not want to drill holes in the back door, the question I have if I'm not using the bolts supplied should I still use the 3M foam tape gasket supplied in the fitting kit, to be honest I'm not really sure what it does?

Not sure about the 3m tape(..probably just creates a waterproof barrier around the edges to stop water making it’s way into the screw holes). In the past have fitted a couple of multirails to the side of a T4. Recommend using Silkaflex adhesive, but also buy silkaflex remover (use on a cloth to remove excess whilst wet). once dry it’s virtually impossible to get rid of any residue.

The screws would ensure that you fix in the correct position, as it might slide out of position during fixing if you just use adhesive.

I just bonded my. I think the gasket is for use if you use screws instead of bonding.

Just a word of warning if you don't intend keeping the vehicle longterm.
Fitting the spoiler precludes fitting that well known California accessory, a tailgate bike rack, without a lot of modification. Bonding directly will make it almost impossible, unlike using screws and 3M tape. This might limit potential resale market.

Has anyone fitted the ABT style rear spoiler as this would still enable you to fit the bike rack? It is a bit taller, so does anyone know if it collides with the roof erected and tailgate open?

Might be worth contacting Vanstyle about this potential issue.

I'd have thought that ABT would have this i mind during the design phase as many will be fitted to Campervans.

No, but I think that it might take you over the 2m height if thats important to you.

All the photos are of vans., which makes visual check difficult if trying to compare to a Cali with roof and awning.

Looking against the window at my van, I think the spoiler might hit the raised humps on either side of roof when its down. If the spoiler goes to the side of the roof when the boot is opened, it would then possibly clash with the awning.

I would want to see one fitted to someone else's cali before committing!

Thanks for all your comments, I think I will leave the gasket out and just bond it. Being a genuine VW one it fits perfectly and have tested to make sure it doesn't touch the awning or the elevated roof.
Recently I removed the VW boot rack as I wanted something lower which would be easier to load ebikes on, once removing the rack I thought the rear looked quite square and bland hence the decision to go for the spoiler which in my opinion make the rear look a lot nicer.
Other added bonuses I now have from changing the racks means that I can now see through the rear window and I can open the rear door with the bikes in situ on the tilting rack.

Never thought I'd be interested in a spoiler, but now I am - looks like an improvement visually. Do you have any pics from further away?
My cycle carrier will be tow bar mounted, so no issue. Is the best way to order it dealer-fitted?

What colour van? there are some colours - black, white & I think grey where you can get the spoiler pre-painted. If thats the case its a pretty simple glue job.

Unless you want Candy white, pearl black or reflex silver - in which case they are available off the shelf factory painted.

Predelivery Dealer fit. Paint still 100% match 4 years on.

I had the Westfalia one fitted by PF Jones, this towbar is the exact same one as fitted by VW , it cost just over £600 to supply and fit, I'll get a picture from further away tomorrow if it stops raining.

I got mine from Chilli Jam Vans pre painted in Candy White, would 100% recommend them really quick service and good price for the genuine spoiler.

Thanks. I’m getting the factory towbar - just wondering whether to get a dealer fit spoiler...

That looks great, we’ve been going to add one for a while but with lockdown haven’t gotten around to it.

I like harrys spoiler, have you noticed any difference in your 0-60 time
yet, or any change in fuel economy
