USED CALI QUESTIONS

Hello, I have been enjoying reading the forums here for a while and have finally taken the plunge and reserved a 2019 California Ocean 199.

My first question involves actually paying for it, the problem is the dealer is nearly 4 hours away so I haven't actually seen the vehicle yet. My intention is to travel there inspect and drive it and complete the purchase. Problem is its a large amount to transfer in one go and my banking app has a maximum amount of 20k per day.
Obviously they will not let me drive it away unless fully paid and I'm not willing to pre pay in 20k increments in advance without seeing the vehicle.

So my question is how can I make a large payment of 50k in one go that will clear the same day or instantly? Chap payments say they clear the same day but that might mean sitting there at the dealership waiting for confirmed payment.

Any advice welcome.

I just phoned my bank and told them I wanted to make a 50k payment on my Debit card to purchase a vehicle. No problem.

I will check back with the dealer, sure I heard him say they no longer accept cards and only do bank transfer.

But will the dealer accept £50k payment via debit card?..when we have tried in the past they have always refused.

Could you not go into your bank branch local to the dealer and do the transfer there? Sure if you ring they will tell you what you need to take in.

Mine was happy too. You can but ask.

We just bought our cali at the weekend - 3 Bank transfers (maximum allowed is 25k with Chase). They rang us back to confirm it was with a legitimate dealer and that we had seen/driven the campervan (then wished us happy camping).

Have the bank get you one of these. Its patented so legit. That should cover it

Another option would be to see the van and if you like it, ask them to deliver it to you on a low loader. Gives you enough time to consider if all is well with the van, the dealer gets to do a proper delivery inspection and you get time to transfer money etc.

Ask your bank what they suggest.
I do a fair amount of high value CHAPs payments & although they are same day it can take until close of banking for them to show up at the recipient’s account.
If it’s a large dealer, chances are that the salesman won’t have access himself to see if the money has cleared.

If it’s a smaller dealer the suggestion of you both retiring to a local bank and doing the transfer in store is a good one. I did that selling a porsche once, I parked the car outside we both went inside, cashier did ID checks on both of us, double checked account numbers did the transfer - having done a £1 test first- we went for a coffee and she texted us when transfer was confirmed. I was the seller and had outstanding finance, she made sure the payment to the finance Co was done at the same time.

If you go into your bank to arrange a CHAPS be aware you’ll get well grilled by them about why you’re making a large payment, to whom, have you evidence (a letter or contract), our verification (even though this was in our own branch!), and independent verification of the banking details for the vendor. This is all focussed on fraud and money laundering. This all happened to us on a couple of CHAPS we did early last year. The first time took nearly 2 hours to complete the interrogation and payment, and it was unexpectedly stressful (should be a positive experience!?).

The second occurrence was easier as we were well prepared to answer the questions, and only took 45 minutes. So, from our experience, I’d say to take with you your driving licence/passport, documentation from the vendor including headed paper with their banking details, and the basis of the sale/ contract, as well as your debit card. And be prepared for questions.

I paid £64k on the debit card at my VW dealer a couple f months ago...no probs, just the amount on the machine, my 4 digit pin and it was paid straight away, no issues

...to clarify, just using my debit card, very easy
