RIP Murray Walker

What! No! Racing great and golfing great within a few months... so so so sad

RIP Murray, a true legend of my youth ...

Sad loss, great presenter he really got into the spirit of the race at least he had a good long innings.

Motor racing hasn't been the same since MW retired. His enthusiasm and his ability to often put a hex on the leader by saying the result was a forgone conclusion was most entertaining.

He came out with some hilarious quotes and Entertained like no other.

he was Mr motor sport to me, (Being of a certain age) revered by many in the sport.

  • "Do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus sounding rough ?"

  • "Alboreto has dropped back up to fifth place"

  • "I can't imagine what kind of problem Senna has. I imagine it must be some sort of grip problem"

  • "He is shedding buckets of adrenalin in that car"

  • "So Bernie [Ecclestone], in the seventeen years since you bought McLaren, which of your many achievements do you think was the most memorable ?" Bernie Answers, "Well I don't remember buying McLaren." [Bernie Ecclestone used to own the Brabham team].

  • Murray: "What's that? There's a BODY on the track!!!"
James: "Um, I think that that is a piece of BODY-WORK, from someone's car."

  • "I don't want to tempt fate but Damon Hill is now only half a lap from his first Grand Prix win and..and HE'S SLOWING DOWN, DAMON HILL IS SLOWING DOWN..HE'S..HE'S STOPPED."

  • "...Cruel luck for Alesi, second on the grid. That's the first time he had started from the front row in a Grand Prix, having done so in Canada earlier this year..."

  • "And there's the man in the green flag!"

If I recall correctly, "Murray Walker, slurry talker", was an often used term of endearment for this wonderful commentator. His interaction with an often inebriated James Hunt in the commentary box was often highly amusing.

Before video recorders when you had to watch live it was nice that if you nodded off during a less interesting bit of a race you could be safe in the knowledge that when something important happened Murray’s voice would go up an octave loudly !!
A great man indeed.
