Just filled up with diesel before leaving the UK and paid £184.9 however unleaded was just £158.9, that's a whopping 26p difference, what's going on?

Before leaving the UK?? If your trip involves France or Spain then diesel will be way cheaper than here! We filled up in Calais 2 weeks ago for £1.38/litre

Primarily because the UK imported most of it's diesel from Russia, there's been a general drop in production elsewhere and an increase in demand from truck / transport industries.

You may not have noticed that there are fuel strikes in France & there are pretty severe supply problems.
Probably makes sense to fill up here !

I hadn’t  looks like I got out in time! (With a tank full of cheap diesel hehe)

Most diesel was refined from Russian oil. Alternative supplies are not as readily available pushing up prices.

We are being screwed left right and centre.

Wasn't diesel the way forward with the Dpf and Egr stuff.
It once was a lot cheaper, before everyone had a diesel car.

Now we're being pushed to electric. :headbang

-According to the data set of 161 countries, gasoline is more expensive than diesel fuel in 84% of all countries. On average, diesel is 9,84% cheaper but the difference varies considerably across countries as well as within countries.

Both gasoline and diesel fuel are produced from crude oil and therefore the cost of crude oil is the main factor influencing gasoline and diesel prices. However, fuel prices also reflect refining costs, taxes, and distribution and marketing costs. Additionally, retail prices are affected by market demand. These factors lead to a price spread between gasoline and diesel.-

Propper shafted.

I think I prefer being shafted at the pumps than in my bed at night courtesy of the madman Putin and his missiles. Mind you, if OPEC weren't so intent on lining their pockets and supporting Putin we would be in a better place.

Bit of light reading

“Crude oil, though, is not the whole story. It must be refined, and though the world’s refineries have, in aggregate, enough capacity to deal with its crude, the refineries are not evenly distributed. There is a growing shortage of refinery capacity in the West; there is spare capacity in China. This means the effect of Europe’s ban on oil products from Russia will be more complex, and perhaps more far-reaching”

Of concern is western refinery capacity and effect on price, as demand for certain refined products (AKA diesel) is disproportionally affected by the war due to need for alternative and quick electricity generation capacity, competing demand for heating fuel and post pandemic increase in consumer demand thus leading to increased demand from the transport sector.

This is why I like this forum. I have actually learnt something.

I never appreciated how and where my diesel comes from.

But I had wondered why the price gap had gone crazy over recent months.

Many will hate that Farage told us all this 6 months ago and it will only get worse. Skip to 35 secs if you want to minimise your exposure....

Big manufacturing companies, data centres, hospitals etc are stockpiling diesel so they have generator back up in the event of power black outs. Not helping the price either….

We experienced that last week in Dole, France went to two filling stations that had no diesel, ended up up filling on the motorway but it was not much more expensive, unlike the UK.

In the UK Diesel has a higher Fuel Duty Tax rate applied before VAT is added than Petrol.
Yes you pay VAT on the Fuel Duty Tax added so the gap increases.
A tax on a tax

I partly agree with you there ;)

Fuel duty per litre for petrol, diesel, bio ethanol and bio diesel is the same, 52.95 ppl

It’s shocking, used to be about five pence difference! People don’t remember when government were pushing diesel as the way forward now they’re penalising people for using dirty diesel! As usual comically awful government

I think we established further up that the duty is the same on unleaded as it is on diesel, so its not the government's doing, and you need to find another scapegoat.

I think it’s been well established over recent weeks the government are totally incompetent and can take the blame for most of the crap going in on this country at the moment.

I've found one or two.
One of them begins with B and ends in idon. The other that is pocketing
cash starts with Z and ends in sky. :D
No, starts with 5th letter of the alphabet followed by the 21st.

Just to add to the misery OPEC are cutting production and that will make diesel even more expensive than petrol apparently.
