Hi, hoping someone might be able to offer some advice. We put a deposit down on a coast back in November. At the time we didn’t realise there was no air con in the back (which I only realised through reading on here). We have two little ones and the plan is to travel round Europe so it is an essential for us. We went to add this on but the sales team have said we now can’t as the van has gone into build (despite no warning, previously been told this would happen in July at the earliest & recently getting a letter saying there are long delays). The sales team also now say the factory is closed so it’s not actually in build, there’s no date when it would be ready but it still can’t be changed. We also can’t reorder as they no longer do the coast. Seems a case of computer says no. There must be a human in vw that can help! I’m having no luck with the sales team…Anyone know where I can go next? I don’t want to give up on my cali dream

We had the same problem, Coast ordered in a bit of a rush on the last day they could be ordered in November. Changed our mind on the colour, but same situation as you that it’s in build. My only suggestion would be to to order a new Ocean, the way residuals are at the moment the second hand value of your Coast will close to pay for the Ocean when it turns up.

I know it’s a nice to have but we have been absolutely fine without it - surprised how powerful the standard air con is to be honest. Admittedly we have not traveled around Europe but have travelled in 28-32 degrees - and still not on full blast.

I don’t think the 3 zone works on hook up - in case that makes a difference to your thinking. (Maybe others will confirm that is right).

Anyway in case it helps with your decision.

We have a MY21 Coast. I didn't specify the 3 zone climate. But we DO have AC in the rear. There is a vent by the sliding door next to the bench seat and options on the overhead control panel to turn it on. Obviously it is just pushing the ac from the front and the rear seat passengers cannot specify different temperatures to the front. But it does supply chilled air to the rear. Hope that helps

We’ve had 3 zone climate in our Beach, have 3 kids and they’ve barely touched or adjusted the rear temperature over the years.

Unfortunately, as the Coast has closed, can’t see you getting too far with VW now about getting it added.

I think you’ll be fine without it.

My understanding is you have hit a perfect/imperfect storm. First Coasts have all been pulled forwards so a lot are coming earlier due to various parts shortage situations and jumping the queue over Oceans. Generally a lot of happy Coast customers. Second you're also hitting spec changes to enable that to happen - so prioritising parts for other models, in this case rear air-con. This has apparantly happened with a number of options on the ordering systems just being removed completely. In a scarcity you divert the parts to where needed the most and it was decided by the ordering people that was not Coasts. Finally you have a status 20 (or more) which basically means your coast is in production, all the parts are ordered from the suppliers and on their way, or already at the factory. In any ordering system (I used to manage Nissans) you cant change an order at this stage at all. Not a case of a human, it's a case of a fairly complicated production ordering and management system having all clicked into place and it is not unclickable. Given the delays happening here and the speed of the order I'd take the rough with the smooth, crank up the front air con and if it gets too much slide the rear windows back :)

Our first Cali only had the simple aircon that you get in a Coast, it cools the whole van down so I wouldn't worry about it too much. We used to travel with 6 of us in the van at times & it still coped. The only limitation is that you end up with the people in the front slightly colder than those in the back.

Its probably more important that you have tinted windows - we have always found the factory tint sufficient, to stop the van heating up too much, along with pulling down blinds on the sunny side when travelling.

Our last Ocean had the 3 zone system & it did cool down the interior slightly quicker as it has a complete additional aircon system its not just extra vents on the same condenser. I would view it as a nice to have rather than a showstopper.

Have you tried the online chat? They should be able to confirm the build status...
I spoke with the manager today, definitely ready to go when the factory opens.

Definitely worth thinking about. I hope you can live with the original colour choice.

That’s helpful thanks

Interesting. I spoke to the manager today and he has no idea where any of the vents are! If you get a chance, it would be amazing to see some photos…

This is a much clearer explanation than the sales team has given me, thank you!

My coast is the same, no Tri Climate, just the bog standard manual air-con, option on the overhead touchscreen pumps cold air out the vent near the sliding door just under the rear seat - no fancy temp controls but works great.

Our is a T5.1 SE, but I totally agree with this comment. We spend our holidays in many different countries in the southern part of Europe. Think long days of travel in hot summers in Spain, Slovenia, Italy, France, etc. And the kids (5 and 7) have never felt inclined to use the airco-settings in the back. Only time they've used it was when they discovered it existed. To play with it. I always forget to turn on the rear airco and I have never heard them complain.

My advise would be: don't give it a second thought and just look forward to the moment your coast arrives and you get to enjoy it together.

Yep, as you can see from @Irelandcali photo's above, you can even adjust the flow and a temp offset too. My advice is that you won't miss what you don't have and a quick fiddle with those settings should be enough to satisfy most rear passengers. I think it was a £900ish option when we ordered ours and I just couldn't justify it. So was fully expecting to have no AC in the rear at all. Was pleasantly surprised on pick up day.

Since we also have a coast in order and have added the 3-zone clima afterwards, some explanation as to why we did this.
When we were traveling with a courtesy California last summer, we noticed that the extra pump and more features are a plus to keep the van cool (there is a 'turbo' button as we called it, to cool the van very fast). After traveling for 10 years with our now 30-year-old T4 westfalia without air con, we (we are 4 now) wanted air conditioning. The standard air con at the coast does the job well (marked during a test drive and info from someone who has a coast with standard air con) but there is definitely a difference. At first we also had configured a coast with the standard air con (it was not worth the extra cost to us at the time of ordering), but we did the upgrade afterwards and yes, for the children ;) .
The air-con with two pumps is powerful enough that adjustment at the back is not really necessary; for me it is therefore an extra 'fancy' panel that will not be used much (see the mentions of some that the children haven't touched it yet). Info from the man I know with the coast with standard air con: you needs to adjust it on quite strong at the front to keep it cool at the back and it's also slower (one air con pump) but: it works fine (there is a vent at the back like someone mentioned).
So, even after all my words in favour of the expensive 3-zone air con, I suspect that you will be fine with the standard air con because indeed, you do not miss what you do not have :thumb If you can still change it, I'd think twice about it but of course it's all up to you.
There will always be those who don't do the expensive upgrade and find the standard air con adequate, just as there are those who just took that option. Both o.k. for me. Others chose an ocean for the standard two-pump 3-zone air con (and often mention the children and/or dog at the back). Everyone has their reasons for their choices: we chose the coast because I didn't want the electro-hydraulic roof but with the 3-zone air con which works more powerful (and faster) than the standard.
At the moment I don't know about the production and the wait is getting absurdly long (for reasons many times worse than the uncomfortably long wait itself). I also read here that the coasts are pulled forwards; apparently this is not the case, I was told by our dealer. The right-hand drive Californias were presumably pulled forwards... hence the many deliveries to you. In Belgium there is an information stop (already from November last year when the timeline disappeared at MyVolkswagen) although I did hear that letters are sent by the importer about the long waiting times. I'm happy for the people who got their california. Enjoy it!
Greetings

To echo some of the other comments, our Beach is fine in the back without 3 zone air-con, and I know my daughter would complain if it was too hot!! Given the cost of diesel right now you possibly wouldn’t use it anyway, as it will have a negative impact on fuel consumption..

We have a coast with rear aircon. I thought it would be essential as well but think we only ever turned it on once in the last 18 months.

Children/dog?

2 kids and a dog. It’s fine for U.K. summers at least. Might struggle in mid to high 30s. High 20s not needed.

Of course and to each his own idea about this; we have been traveling in a westfalia for 10 years now without air con and then the temperatures in the summer quickly rise above 30 degrees. We really had enough.
It remains however a larger volume to keep at a pleasant temperature and that is why we opted for the extra air conditioning pump. For us and our two kids. Although I understand that for many it is enough to have the standard, we go from none to the 3-zone air con

I think that’s why it’s generally skipped in U.K. default builds and standard in Southern Europe. I’d agree that if you are planning long road trips in Italy/Spain/ south of France you probably need it for the rear passenger comfort. In U.K. probably not (maybe 1 or 2 days a year).
