Good afternoon Hivemind

I'm hoping the collective wisdom of this esteemed gathering (is the flattery working?) will be able to shed some light on my problem.

I have a beast of an eFatBike. 4.5" tyres, step thru frame and weighing in at 39kg. I'd obviously like to transport it with my T6.1 California. The issue I'm finding with most of the regular recommended products (Thule, Atero...) is that they state a 30kg bike limit even is the carrier is rated higher. Therein lies my query. Can I load the 39kg bike onto the bike carrier if I do not put any other cycles? My wife's trike folds and can ride inside the Cali.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a beast carrier?

Occasionally I want to tow my camping trailer and therefore will need to use the towball. I am also looking to mount a carrier to the trailer. This I will achieve by using some box section and then mounting any carrier onto that, eg. Thule 598. That's where I hit a similar issue. Any carrier I can find, even with the FatBike conversion kits, is not rated high enough.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks.

Can’t help on the question but as a road cyclist/weight weenie 39kg gave me palpitations, I’ve been trying to get my road bike down below 7.5kg as I thought it was a bit heavy :D

Maybe look for a scooter carrier?

It's certainly a lump, but then so am I. I wanted something that would resist off road trails, beaches, mountains etc. Speed isn't of the essence I want to get to remote areas often with fishing gear on board.

If I don't find something commercially I'll try to build something.

I’ve recently bought one of these: https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/r...ikes_no_022780/Qx@w,6M42VAwp3@Rb{~cC4ure_QXhD

To carry 2x +35kg e-bikes, so far so good.

Hi So when I brought the Cali it had the VW cycle carrier on the van already, but have to say a 39kg bike is always going to cause problems. Any manufacturer is always going to have a safety limit built in to the product so if you are carrying a single bike at that weight you should be ok....But some people will two or 3 of the same bike and just see them as a bike hence the problems on our motorways.... What is the overall weight limit of the carrier is what you need to know...

Just checked my VW one and its 70kg, so that would easily carry your bike at 39kg plus another at 31kg. concentrate on the max load of the carrier and keep within that is my advice. get the scales out LOL

Can you remove the battery to reduce the weight whilst on the carrier ?

Check - is it 30 kg per bike for a total of 60 kg? Else, belt and braces could be the solution. Use the rack but use an additional support strap .

See pic. Strap from the rack to the door top.

Thule can carry 60 kg in total, my E bike is 23 kg and lifting it onto the tailgate rack is ok. 39 kg would require Some strength

I believe some Countries require E bike batteries to be removed when transporting such bicycles on external carriers.

That looks like a solution. FWIW I miscalculated on the bike weight, it's 35kg, so if I remove the battery we are getting very close to the notional 30kg limit. My wife rides a three-wheeler that folds and is carried inside the Cali, so I'm only planning on carrying the one ebike on the back.

Thanks all. :thanks

I have the same problem...

Thins is...thule xt2 (easy fold and velocompact) seems to be for 60kg so (without the battery you should be ok) with 2 bikes. No prob for the biikes. I know with the easyfold you can open the tailgate. The only problem is too expensive. Not sure about the velocompact

then...the Atera Strada DL3 let you open the tailgate, and it suppouse to handle 45kg or 63 if you add the four bike rail. Wich doesn't really make much sense because the structure of the bike rack is the same but with just another rail. I guess here the problem is that the rails are not made to handle that much weight (wich really..it's a reccomendation and should be a big problem to overload them a bit XD)

here are the specs:

I'm exaclty at the same point as you are right now hahaha

I don't know if the Atera Genio PRO will let you open the tailgate

So far my idea is to found a second hand thule or an offer (new they are between 800/1200..at least here in spain)

Also I found this in another vwt6 related forum

That and the velospace xt3 seems like a good option too E829A1CF-9891-4133-A35C-1913756103FD.jpeg
