Help! Gas not working

Hi guys,
We have a 2015 California SE and are on our first proper holiday in it and the gas has decided to stop working! We know it worked before because we have taken it out on day trips and it’s all been fine. We have tried replacing the cylinder but that hasn’t worked. We have the bottom valve and the back valve both switched to on. No gas sound is coming out when we try either burner. The only difference I can think was we haven’t filled our water tank up before but I can’t see why that would affect it. Any bright ideas?? I feel like we are missing something. Any help would be appreciated!
 
I'd have thought it's a pretty simple system. Sounds frustrating certainly!
No signs of a gas leak I expect? And no kinks in the hose at the bottle.
Are you confident it's connected correctly and it's not an empty bottle??

Try giving the regulator a few stern thumps with something not too heavy. Sometimes the internal spring sticks.
 
Take gas bottle out and open value and shut quickly to check gas is coming out of bottle.
Does sound like a faulty regulator, pretty cheap to buy new one.
 
We defo have gas cus it is a new bottle and we have tested it and can smell gas. No kinks in the hose. Tried giving the regulator a tap but it hasn’t helped.

@BippinsVWClub , as Sad says, it is a pretty simple system. In this case it will be a process of elimination that you will need to follow. I would start with the cylinder

Is there any way in which you can weigh the cylinders? Given below is a weight chart. This will help you determine if there is any gas in the cylinder or not.

If there is gas, then take the cylinder with the gas nozzle that fits on top, open it without the outlet pipe attached and see if there is any gas flow.

If yes, then the next step of attaching the pipe and then opening the gas regulator on the hob and see if there is gas flow.

If there is gas flow, you should be able to hear and smell it.

I had the same problem when I first picked up my old van and dealer replaced the regulator and it all worked fine.
So if you e checked bottle and the temperature isn’t below 5degrees as that can effect gas then I would go get a new regulator I’m sure they are about £30 (ish)

Ok, seen this after my post - in which case, can I suggest that you use a matchstick to light the gas hob? That may help as it could be an issue with the spark.

After going through all the steps I think it is most likely the regulator that has gone. We have read something about burping the system because the safety valve in the regulator may have been triggered. We will try that and if that fails by a new regulator. Thanks for everyone’s suggestions - I will let you know how we get on!

We use a lighter to light anyway. Can’t even hear or smell gas though.
 
is there a valve in the cupboard beneath the hob to turn on?
 
So the new regulator has arrived - thanks for the link @KGCali. Is this something we can fit ourselves or do you think we would be best off taking it to a garage?

Very easy to do yourself, just tighten finger tight then use an adjustable spanner to LIGHTLY tighten the thread nuts then turn the gas on and check for any gas leaks by spraying soapy water on the joints and look for bubbles. Good luck and don't forget to turn the gas off at the bottle whenever in transit!

Before replacing the regulator....

Is one of these valves you mention the one in the cupboard under the sink (like @Wrongford mentioned)? You probably checked it, but if that's not open it won't work and would explain why a different gas cilinder did not solve the problem.

Yeah it is open but thanks for checking!
 
Ok, I did have issues with the gas not working some time ago but the knobs were sticky - not turning freely. a few drops of WD40 overnight and some twists of the knob with the gas turned off, must have released any gunk and freed up the knobs to move freely and also the flow of gas.

Remove the plastic knob - it just pulls out. Spray some WD40 on top of the metal knob attachment. twist it a few times, spray again and leave for some time/overnight. Repeat if required.

We recently had the same problem. I replaced the regulator and “hey presto” everything’s back to normal.
 
Just to update everyone and anyone reading this post in the future. The regulator has now been replaced and the gas is working again! I think we were opening the valve on the bottle too quickly so in future we will go slower and hopefully won't get the same problem. Thanks again for the help!
